# NotchNook notes, tasks and timers: one focused work session

Not every piece of work needs a new system. A note, [a clear next action](https://locafe.app/journal/a-workday-with-notchnook/) and a short timer can be enough to move a small task forward, with all three close in NotchNook.

## Write the outcome first

Use a note to describe what you want to finish in this session. Keep it concrete: a draft outline, a checked calculation, a completed export or [a reply you are ready to send](https://locafe.app/journal/shortcuts-close-to-your-work/).

NotchNook’s notes support bold, italics and underline. Use that formatting to make the important line easy to find when you reopen the Nook, rather than treating the note as a second full document.

## Make the next action visible

Add the immediate action to the to-do list. If several tasks are present, star the one that matters for this session. The list gives the small next step a place you can return to quickly.

For example, the note might hold three points for a proposal while the task says “finish the opening paragraph.” Those are different jobs: one preserves context, and the other tells you where to start.

- Note: “Proposal: audience, opening point, next step.”
- Task: “Draft the opening paragraph.”
- Timer: a short block that fits the task; review the draft when it ends.

## Use the timer as a boundary

Set a timer using its wheels or a preset. Work in your normal application until the session ends, then reopen the Nook to check the task and capture the next step.

A timer is useful when it has a purpose: a short first draft, a break reminder or a limit on a task that could otherwise expand. Adjust the duration to the work you are doing rather than adopting a new routine simply to test a feature.
